English Version: Micro-Expressions and Tells: How to Spot Bluffers in Party Deduction Games
The Mask of Language and the Honesty of the Body
In social deduction games like BluffJudge, players focus almost entirely on what is said. Psychological research shows, however, that fabricating an improvised narrative causes cognitive load to surge. This mental strain leaks involuntarily into physical gestures and facial muscles.
1. Establishing the Baseline
The cardinal rule of behavioral observation: never interpret gestures in isolation.
The Baseline: Some players naturally gesture wildly, laugh under mild stress, or fidget with cards.
Pre-Game Calibration: Observe how each person communicates during casual chit-chat. Note baseline blink rates, speech cadence, and resting posture.
Spotting Deviations: True tells are deviations from the baseline. A naturally quiet player who suddenly elaborates with defensive enthusiasm is displaying a major anomaly.
2. Micro-Expressions and Facial Clues
Micro-expressions last only 1/25 to 1/5 of a second, reflecting involuntary emotional states:
Asymmetrical Smiles: Genuine smiles involve both the zygomatic major muscle and the orbicularis oculi (crow's feet around the eyes). Forced confidence smiles usually only pull mouth corners, often tilted asymmetrically.
Eye Over-Compensation: Because amateurs believe liars avoid eye contact, experienced Bluffers force prolonged, unblinking gazes directly into the Judge's eyes.
The Freeze Response: Under threat, humans freeze. Watch for sudden stillness in chest movement or breathing right when an unexpected question lands.
Neck Touching and Pacifying: Stroking the back of the neck, adjusting collars, or pressing the suprasternal notch (base of throat) are primal pacifying behaviors under interrogation.
Torso Lean: Knowers naturally lean slightly forward to deliver factual memories. Bluffers frequently lean back into their chairs or place drink bottles between themselves and the Judge as defensive barriers.
4. Practical Interrogation Tactics for Judges
To provoke involuntary physical tells, apply the Pregnant Pause: 1. Let the suspect finish their prepared response. 2. Hold silence for 2 full seconds while maintaining calm eye contact. 3. Pivot unexpectedly: "You said it felt old—was the surface cold to the touch or warm?" 4. Watch the immediate reaction: rapid blink burst, pupil dilation, or a micro-swallow before speech.
